OAR SOME ON THE WATER AND OFF FROM THE BOYS IN THE BOAT TO THE GUYS WITH FIVE STRAIGHT NATIONAL TITLES THE UW MEN S CREW PROGRAM IS EARNING ACCOLADES ALL AROUND THE GLOBE I t wasn t enough to be the first college crew program in history to win five consecutive national championships Not enough to travel to England s legendary Henley Royal Regatta and bring home the Prince Albert Challenge Cup Not enough for their forefathers to be immortalized in the bestselling book The Boys in the Boat about the Husky triumph in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin Last year Husky Men s Crew took top honors in something just as impressive as all those awesome accomplishments the race for academic achievement With a 3 09 GPA the team earned the highest average GPA of any large sized men s program on campus Two UW oarsmen Jernej Markovc and Edward Nainby Luxmoore posted perfect 4 0 GPAs in the spring They are performing not just on the water but in the classroom boasts Blake Nordstrom a crew member with the UW Class of 1982 and a long time supporter of the program Blake s family has deep roots in Husky Crew His maternal grandfather Willard Wakeman and his father s cousin John N Nordstrom both rowed for the Huskies in the 1950s Blake credits his experience as an oarsman for introducing him to lifelong friends and for helping to build skills like teamwork and seeing what s possible when you focus and put your mind to it When his grandfather passed away the family established the Willard Wakeman Endowment to provide annual scholarships to a crew team member 4 UW Tyee Club Gratitude Report 2014 15 What s most gratifying for me and my wife and my extended family is to give young people opportunities like I had says the co president of Nordstrom the iconic Seattle based retailer In my grandfather s name we re able to help someone come to the UW and meet their goals As co chair of the UW Rowing Stewards Blake also helps raise money to cover equipment travel costs and other expenses that help keep both the men s and women s programs competitive This was a really rich and important experience in my life a chapter I m very proud of I feel fortunate that other people made it available and possible for me and I think others have the opportunity to do that moving forward Blake says Every gift makes an impact Head Coach Michael Callahan couldn t agree more He credits the incredible support of crew alumni fans and community members as the single most influential factor in the team s winning legacy When people donate they re not only helping us develop winning teams he says They re investing in the future of our student athletes

REBOUNDING FROM CANCER KATIE COLLIER OVERCOMES LEUKEMIA AND A KNEE INJURY TO PLAY BASKETBALL AND PLAN A BRIGHT FUTURE A sudden diagnosis of rare cancer put more than Katie Collier s basketball hopes at risk At the age of 17 she was faced with the possibility that she might die before even starting college One of the interns told me if we can keep you alive for the next 48 hours you re going to make it recalls the Covington native I was in the hospital for two weeks had chemo for eight months and was taking 20 pills a day Her illness struck on a recruiting trip to the UW She awoke in a dorm room with blood from her mouth all over her pillow Within a day she went from a seemingly healthy high school student weighing multiple college scholarship offers to treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia Fast forward a year and Katie had rebounded thanks to extraordinary treatment at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance She d signed with the Huskies and was at summer practice before her freshman year when she felt her knee pop After chemo I felt stronger and I was ready to play Then I tore my knee Katie says But who knows Maybe it gave my body more time to recover from cancer With unbelievable support from teammates and coaches she underwent nine months of rehab with state of the art conditioning regimens training equipment and personnel funded in part by Tyee Club donors Today Katie is healed and healthy and has two more years ahead of her to play for the Huskies Majoring in early childhood and family studies she wants to work with kids a passion she developed after volunteering with other cancer survivors at Ronald McDonald House As the youngest of five children Katie is grateful to the donors including the Tom McFarlan Scholarship Endowment which funded her scholarship whose generosity eases families financial burdens and who also helped make her recovery possible It s great to know that they see us as an investment and are willing to donate their hard earned money to make our futures brighter 9 UWT YEEC LUB O R G
