With gratitude to you our donors for an incredible year and even brighter future WHY DO WE EXIST It s the question we began with 18 months ago when I became Athletic Director We know we are here to provide thrilling moments in sports and to fill our fans with pride We are here to hire coaches and staff who exemplify our values We are here to manage our financial resources responsibly But at our core our singular purpose above all else emerged crystal clear We re here for the student athletes Developing young men and women of the highest character who have integrity and a commitment to doing good in the world and giving them every opportunity to excel academically personally and athletically that s our reason for being And because we were laser focused on that mission and in engaging you in it with us we succeeded beyond our wildest dreams You embraced the Game Changer Campaign for Husky Athletics stepping up to support us in record fashion We streamlined operations by viewing every line item of our budget through the lens of how it contributed to the student athlete experience We improved the fan experience too and you responded by attending games to cheer on your favorite teams The results showed up on the field and off Not only did 16 of our 22 teams advance to post season play and perform at championship levels but 18 teams earned GPAs of 3 0 or above the best effort in history With the countless hours they devote to practicing conditioning traveling and playing our student athletes put their education first When you support UW Athletics you build championship behaviors that last a lifetime Husky student athletes succeed today because of you They will succeed in their careers their families and their communities tomorrow because of you I hope this annual gratitude report shows you what an impact you ve made Thanks to you the best is yet to come Go Huskies Jennifer Cohen UW DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS 2 UW Tyee Club Gratitude Report GRATITUDE REPORT TO TYEE CLUB DONORS SEPTEMBER 2017 UW Tyee Club members support the academic and athletic experiences of more than 650 University of Washington studentathletes in 22 men s and women s sports Your gifts account for nearly 25 percent of the funding we need to recruit the most sought after studentathletes hire the best coaches develop championship teams and build facilities that make the fan experience second to none You make all the difference SUPPORT THE GAME CHANGER CAMPAIGN FOR HUSKY ATHLETICS Give your Huskies a competitive edge by donating to support the education and development of student athletes and to fuel the on and off field success of every UW Athletics team Learn more at uwtyeeclub org

Inspired to advocate for justice a student athlete discovers he WOMEN S SOCCER PLAYER EARNS PRESTIGIOUS BONDERMAN FELLOWSHIP Havana McElvaine took a breath dropped to one knee and in one life changing moment solidified her identity as a leader The 2017 sociology graduate had been taking charge on the soccer field for as long as she could remember She attended a prestigious private high school in Denver and traveled the nation playing soccer in elite leagues If anyone asked her who she was she d quickly respond I m a soccer player When she arrived at Washington as a student athlete on scholarship it seemed like the next four years would be an extension of that athletic identity Then she signed up for Professor Alexes Harris sociology class on race and ethnicity 4 UW Tyee Club Gratitude Report It was amazing to walk into a class where someone looked like me and held prestigious degrees and cared enough to master topics I d always been passionate about human rights social justice racial and gender equality recalls Havana I felt so empowered It was the awakening of a more expansive sense of self for Havana as a black woman a scholar and someone who could make a difference on campus and beyond It also led to her becoming Husky Athletics first recipient of the prestigious post graduate Bonderman Fellowship which will propel Havana on an eight month voyage through nine different countries where she will explore the history of black identity and racism Kneeling down to stand up With the nation s racial divisions taking center stage in the 2016 election season and the Black Lives Matter movement making headlines Havana also was following

and equality r voice Husky Athletics commitment to equity focuses on making a lasting impact Hoping to draw at least 50 student athletes to UW Athletics first formal training event in equity and inclusion organizers planned a 90 minute session with a nationally known lecturer Three hours and 200 students later they knew the department s commitment to UW President Ana Mari Cauce s top priority initiative was off to a powerful start The students were so engaged and didn t want to leave that session recalls Kim Durand who directs student development for Husky Athletics We focused on building community so we could have in depth sometimes difficult conversations around racial equity and have people feeling safe and comfortable with each other The goal was open dialogue and letting them know we care about the same things they care about adds Shondell Reed another executive staff member helping to guide the initiative The department s commitment extends beyond student athletes to coaches and staff to hiring and personnel policies and to supporting individual teams efforts There s no check the box race and equity program for the day or the month or the year It s ever present in how we make decisions It s about having a lasting impact Kim says the controversial decisions of some professional athletes to kneel during the national anthem not as a sign of disrespect for their country but of their hope for a nation more united against racism Havana s emotions hit a peak as she watched news footage of a black man killed by police in Oklahoma in September 2016 She remained deeply upset the next day when Women s Soccer had its first match of the season Sensing her student s distress as they stood on the sidelines Coach Lesle Gallimore turned to Havana and said If you want to kneel you can In that moment she really knew me better than I knew myself She enabled me to be in solidarity with a movement I cared about and that was really powerful for me Havana says It was one of the most memorable moments I had at UW and in my whole life A leader is born That one knee opened up more opportunities for discussion and reflection among her teammates and coaches The UW Athletic Department also invited Havana to speak before the staff and chose her as one of just two UW student athletes to attend a conference in Texas for black student athletes from across the nation When she begins her solo Bonderman travel in January throughout South America Africa and Asia Havana will further develop her leadership skills and passion for social equality As someone who believes fiercely in the equality of all people I feel a strong sense of responsibility to learn about those who gave their lives so that I could do exactly this travel freely and seek experiences that better equip me to fight for those who will come after me Havana wrote in her Bonderman essay 5 UWT YEEC LUB O R G

Coaches breathe life into our philosophy of putting student athletes first Head Football Coach Chris Petersen brought the concept of our kind of guys to Washington He recruits young men who have the talent integrity and drive to not only be great football players but to be great people We ve borrowed that phrase to reflect our commitment to hiring our kind of coaches Our coaches know that success isn t measured solely in wins and losses but in how well they develop their student athletes as educated principled citizens ready to make an impact on the world explains Director of Athletics Jennifer Cohen who in her first year appointed five new head coaches who are already making a difference where it counts the most in the lives of student athletes As the heir to the long time head basketball coach at Syracuse where he had been an assistant for 22 years Coach Hop had his future all mapped out Then Washington came calling He says his decision came down to the three Ps people place and potential Convinced he d be working with people whose values aligned with his own he met generous donors and die hard fans who proved there was a deep passion for basketball at a world class university in spectacular Seattle The potential was all about the student athletes Mike Hopkins MEN S BASKETBALL If we put these young men first and treat our program like a family then the wins will come he says That s why we coach to be great role models and help them grow to reach their potential so they can make a difference in the world I ve found the perfect place to do that Jody Wynn also wasn t looking for a new job when the UW approached her After eight successful seasons at Long Beach State she and her associate head coach her husband Derek were happy in California It only took one day for us to learn that Husky Athletics core values mission and philosophy of developing the holistic student athlete really fell in line with our own belief system she says She is quick to praise the impact fans and donors make on Women s Basketball Giving is important because you need financial support to excel Your donations make a difference in the lives of student athletes every day Jody says But that s not all The relationships our young women can build a door that might open that can mean the world 6 UW Tyee Club Gratitude Report Jody Wynn WOMEN S BASKETBALL

In her first season as head coach of Washington Gymnastics Elise Ray took the GymDawgs to NCAA Nationals for the first time since 1998 She also was named Pac 12 Coach of the Year Yet she had hesitated when she was offered the head coaching position Matthew Leib The Whole U My favorite part of the job is the relationships I d built with the student athletes I didn t want that to change because I d now be in charge says Elise who was a UW assistant coach for six years But then Jen said you can do both It felt so good to know that I could still hold the relationships with them talk to them about life and be their head coach She took the helm and instituted a tougher work ethic pushing her team to train harder Elise Ray GYMNASTICS PHOTO About halfway through the season it was incredible to see them start to believe me Elise remembers They were fully committed and the goal of reaching Nationals became very real for all of us Hailing from Ireland and coaching in Alabama Alan Murray didn t know much about Washington when the UW came courting He quickly became impressed with the humility and kindness he found when he arrived here People are modest and understated here and it s that way at the University too Your work speaks for you here and that is the philosophy that runs through the UW Alan says He was also impressed with the deep support donors provide to his program and what that means to the young golfers he coaches Alan Murray When it s clear that people care about what you do that s a huge boost in life for a young person It makes them more confident he explains The generosity and support is great here Our program would never be as good as it is without it MEN S GOLF How do you top a stellar 10 year stint at Stanford that included winning a national title and being named national coach of the year You win a national championship and earn the Pac 12 Coach of the Year title in your first year as head coach of UW Women s Rowing Yaz Farooq credits a broad team effort for that impressive feat Our rowers are respected as incredibly hard working athletes and the pride our fans take in this sport is a big part of the UW s identity she says To be the coach of a program where a University and community celebrate your sport and think not only that it s worthwhile but that it s special it s a dream job for me Yaz Farooq WOMEN S ROWING 7 UWT YEEC LUB O R G

An unforgettable Purple Passport experience goes beyond the surface of building Courts for Kids It may have started with the mission of building a sports court in a remote village in Costa Rica It ended with building a community of student athletes and their Costa Rican hosts bridging cultures to foster an appreciation for the values in life that mean the most More than 25 student athletes along with a few coaches and staff members partnered with the nonprofit Courts for Kids this past summer a learning experience launched by a generous anonymous donation to establish the Purple Passport program and nurtured by other caring donors who believe in giving with a purpose in mind Many of the people in the community don t have much at least compared to American standards but the people in this community are genuinely happy and content They ve given me a new perspective of what it means to be grateful and caring Michaela Nelson Gymnastics If you only operate in your comfort zone you don t learn anything It s only when you step outside yourself and challenge yourself do you have the opportunity for growth explains Bob Thompson who with his wife Deb established an endowment that helped fund the Costa Rican trip and will continue to fund similar opportunities Traveling to other countries serving others can be a life changing experience The group stayed in the homes of local families during the 10 day trip cut off from cell phone service bathing in icy cold water communicating without knowing the language and laboring to plan and build a sport court that will become the central gathering place for the village of Matambu 8 UW Tyee Club Gratitude Report I know this trip has changed me in many ways but what I m going to hold onto most is to not take anything for granted to not get lost in the social media world and to enjoy the present and what life has to give you at that time and place Stacey Fung Women s Tennis

I learned that no matter where you are in the world people love to come together to enjoy the most wonderful things in life sport food talking laughing and other people s company Anouschka Fenley Women s Rowing In America we have so much stuff nice houses new cars toys of all sorts for young and old but we are always driven by the need for more I ve really gained an appreciation for how these Costa Ricans live and how they live their life by the motto of Pura Vida Bryce Logan Men s Soccer What I learned from the community is to live in the now Being present and embracing each moment made this trip really special From shoveling gravel to cooking tamales it was a great experience Living the Pura Vida lifestyle is very cleansing and relaxing Then when I took a step back and taking everything in made me realize what I take for granted back home Brooke Mooney Women s Rowing I honestly feel like this journey has helped me grow and be less afraid to do things that make me uncomfortable This trip has opened my mind and humbled my heart Pascale Dumesnil Women s Soccer I more clearly understand the strengths and triumphs of other people around the world Despite the toil they are content and love their lives and heritage always willing to share and offer kindness Carey Campbell Track Field 9 UWT YEEC LUB O R G
