LET S IGNITE HUSKY PRIDE LIKE NEVER BEFORE Dear Tyee Club members I was 9 years old the first time my dad took me to a Husky football game It was love at first down THE TYEE DIFFERENCE After 24 years in college sports management and the past 18 years at UW managing football and baseball operations and forging relationships with you our dedicated donors becoming your Athletic Director is more than just a dream come true for me It s the beginning of realizing big dreams for all of us Published by the University of Washington Tyee Club I m honored that UW President Ana Mari Cauce entrusted me with this responsibility For the first time in decades a born and bred passionate Husky fan just like you is leading our efforts to build champions on the field and off Working together here s some of what it will take to fuel our dreams VOLUME 1 NUMBER 3 FALL 2016 Tyee Club members support the academic and athletic experiences of more than 650 student athletes in 22 men s and women s sports Your gifts account for nearly 25 percent of the funding we need to recruit the most sought after student athletes hire the best coaches develop championship teams and build facilities that make the fan experience second to none You make all the difference Let s fill the stands One of the reasons Coach Pete is able to recruit great football players is because they want to play in a beautiful stadium that s full of loud enthusiastic fans Other PAC 12 schools struggle with fan apathy Not us We re rabid Dawgs I m sympathetic that night games have provoked a growl in some of us like my own father But day or night within the parameters of a PAC 12 contract that gives us many benefits we must nurture both old and new traditions to fill our stadium for every single game Our beloved Huskies are depending on us And not just for football but for every sport Let s light this community on fire for the Huskies We will unify our university and our community around a shared passion for all things Husky Winning helps as the success of the Women s Basketball and Women s Golf teams proved But so does believing in our potential Magic happens when we come together with the unshakable conviction that we will succeed Let s remember why we re all here We love to win and we will At the end of the day though we re here because we are committed to giving 650 student athletes the best experience of their lives We re developing lifelong Huskies who ll continue to do us proud long after they graduate In this issue of The Tyee Difference you ll learn about an unprecedented campaign to reshape UW Athletics for generations to come Achieving our dreams depends upon its success too In the coming months we will introduce other ways to engage you in our vision for the future Together we re going to ignite Husky pride like you ve never seen before Go Dawgs Jennifer Cohen UW Athletic Director 2 T HE T Y E E DI FFERENC E FALL 2016 WRITING AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT Teresa Moore and Liz Murtaugh Gillespie Moore Ink PR Fundraising Communications GRAPHIC DESIGN DavidOwenHastings com THE UW TYEE CLUB Graves Hall Box 354070 Seattle WA 98195 4070 tyeeclub uw edu 206 543 2234 uwtyeeclub org

LEARNING BY EXAMPLE DEFENSIVE LINEMAN VITA VEA IS LIVING UP TO THE EXPECTATIONS HE AND OTHERS HAVE SET FOR HIM It was Vita s senior year in high school A lackadaisical attitude up until that point coupled with a learning disability had affected his grades Football and a neighborhood coach he called Uncle T were the encouragement he needed to stay in school In order to graduate he started school at 8 a m and took night classes until 8 p m To meet NCAA eligibility requirements he added an extra year of tough classes after high school graduation Vita Vea s mother worked so hard while he was growing up holding down as many as five jobs at a time that her family often would see her only on Sundays Her selfless commitment was one of several life lessons that fueled the defensive lineman s determination to excel as a Husky student athlete His parents came to the poor and violence plagued town of East Palo Alto California in the early 90s it had the highest homicide rate in the nation from the Polynesian island nation of Tonga Vita saw countless athletically talented friends squander their potential to drug abuse He idolized his older brother Sifa When Vita and his father had to drive Sifa to juvenile hall to face up to a youthful bad decision another life lesson made an impact It opened my eyes the junior starter recalls My sister Alisi was in college and my parents were always working With Sifa gone I had to grow up on my own His brother grew up too and now plays football at Dickinson State in North Dakota His freshman year at Washington Vita made the Dean s List One of the Athletic Department s learning specialists Pam Robenolt has become another mentor I have a bad day when she s disappointed in me for not doing my best he smiles I really love football states Vita who s considering a degree in anthropology after an inspiring studyabroad trip to work with the indigenous people of Tahiti But the main reason I worked so hard to get here is my mom She s worked so much for her family to be able to live a happy normal life I want to be able to support her so she won t have to work anymore Vita was a member of a small group of diverse students who took a course on indigenous research with Holly Barker Burke Museum curator for Oceanic and Asian Culture and senior lecturer of anthropology Each student created Portrait of a Researcher posters choosing a museum location and an object within the Burke collection they felt represented their research and challenged preconceived biases about themselves as men of color and or student athletes The course also included mentoring high school students PHOTO Cathy Morris Burke Museum YOUR IMPACT on scholarships By supporting student athlete scholarships you give young men and women the opportunity of a lifetime for a world class UW education Totaling nearly 13 million a year scholarships are one of Husky Athletics largest annual expenses While we appreciate donations to our annual scholarship fund The Game Changer Campaign for Husky Athletics seeks to dramatically increase scholarship endowments To learn more about the impact you can make through scholarship support see pages 10 and 11 U WT YEECLU B O RG 3

BOUNDLESS ADVENTURES ABROAD PURPLE PASSPORT EXPERIENCES GIVE STUDENT ATHLETES BOLD AND CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES TO STUDY OVERSEAS There are few college experiences more immersive eye opening and transformational than studying abroad But for many student athletes rigorous year round training schedules make it difficult if not impossible to be away from campus for an entire quarter The UW s Purple Passport program takes a can do approach to giving student athletes opportunities to venture overseas with service learning trips to places like China Japan French Polynesia and beyond This March student athletes joined other UW students in a Classics course and traveled to Rome with Professor Sarah Stroup for a week and a half touring the Colosseum and the Pantheon and trekking to Mount Vesuvius to peer down at the ruins of Pompeii You hear about Vesuvius destroying Pompeii but when you re there you get a sense of spatial and temporal immediacy Professor Stroup says You look down on the city that was destroyed in 79 A D and you re standing on the volcano that did it Suddenly that doesn t seem inaccessible and far away It just becomes part of your world experience As part of War Games Greek Athletes Roman Gladiators the Modern Olympics and College Football students visited a Gladiatorial Training Center where they donned tunics and wielded padded wooden swords as they re enacted duels Justin Schmidt a senior in Men s Soccer walked away feeling a deeper sense of appreciation for the privilege that modern day athletes have to play sports for fun Gladiators were competing for more than just the victory They were competing for their lives Justin reflected grateful for the donor support and scholarships that allowed him and other students to go on the trip Purple Passport also funds courses UW athletes take when their teams travel to compete internationally 4 T HE T Y E E DI FFERENC E FALL 2016 YOUR IMPACT on the student athlete experience Husky Athletics puts student athletes first in academics in athletics and in life Your support empowers this promise When you give to The Game Changer Campaign for Husky Athletics together we will lead the PAC 12 and the nation in providing all UW student athletes with transformative experiences like Purple Passport and more Because of you we can and will continue to offer mentoring programs study abroad opportunities internships and other experiences that create well rounded leaders who will shape our world for generations to come Learn more about how you can support game changing studentathlete experiences on pages 10 and 11

THIS PLACE IS A GAME CHANGER IN SO MANY WAYS COACH CHRIS PETERSEN IS READY TO WIN BUT IT TAKES EVERYBODY DOING THEIR PART The biggest surprise about the UW for Chris Petersen now starting his third season as head football coach is that it really was everything he expected it to be and then some The power the opportunities the potential that the UW has for our kids this place is a game changer in so many ways he says I m so excited for our players to come here You just have to open your heart and let the people here guide you and it can change your life in ways you never dreamed In nearly 30 years of college coaching he says the game has never been so competitive That makes it all the more crucial for Husky fans and donors to understand their role in building winning teams It sounds like a clich but to have a competitive edge takes everybody We can t just have great administration or a really good coaching staff or great players When you re competing at this level and the margin for error is minute everything matters If you don t have it all in place you can t be the best His confidence is almost as strong as his passionate commitment to the student athletes he coaches Our purpose is to build a team to win championships and build young men to excel in life he states We emphasize accountability work ethic goals values and education They can play football at the highest level and they can do everything else at the highest level too Winning is such a hard thing to do The people who support us understand how good our league is They know what it takes to compete at the highest levels not just athletically but academically and in life Coach Petersen explains He s excited about The Game Changer Campaign for Husky Athletics because he knows increased funding will enable him to recruit and retain the best coaches and provide his team with cutting edge tools for success such as virtual reality technology now being developed and used at competing schools like Stanford Everybody can feel this Now s the time We just need everybody to take that next step YOUR IMPACT on recruiting great coaches Increased private support will allow us to recruit the very best role models and leaders for our student athletes the dedicated coaches who serve as our faculty For the first time ever The Game Changer Campaign for Husky Athletics offers you the opportunity to establish named coaching endowments Just as endowing a professorship or deanship in an academic department helps attract world class scholars to the UW an endowed coaching or staff position will enhance our success in bringing exciting new talent to Husky Athletics and keeping the great staff we already have Learn more about the campaign on pages 10 and 11 U WT YEECLU B O RG 5

GRATITUDE A PASSION FOR ALL THINGS HUSKY A LASTING IMPACT ON STUDENT ATHLETES LIVES ALUMNI COUPLE ENDOWS A SCHOLARSHIP TO HONOR ALL THAT THE UW MADE POSSIBLE FOR THEM AJ Maestas and Lacey Bundy discovered love inspiration and the foundation for successful careers at the University of Washington Now the devoted Husky fans are paying it backwards so that UW student athletes can benefit from the same transformative educational experiences that launched AJ s and Lacey s lives The couple met in the late 90s in Professor Bill Resler s tax accounting class at the UW Foster School of Business The attorney and esteemed lecturer who retired in 2016 YOUR IMPACT on endowments Nothing makes a longer lasting impact on someone s life than a college education And nothing makes a bigger impact on the scholarships that give our student athletes access to a UW education than establishing a scholarship endowment Rule changes approved last year by the NCAA now require us to cover the full cost of college attendance for our studentathletes This rule change added more than 800 000 to our annual scholarship costs making scholarship endowments more important than ever before Today our scholarship endowments total 63 million and pay out 2 million a year to cover a quarter of the annual cost With your support of our quarterly costs The Game Changer Campaign for Husky Athletics will increase our endowment total to 100 million and move us far closer to the goal of endowing all our scholarship costs Learn more about how you can support game changing scholarship endowments on pages 10 and 11 6 T HE T Y E E DI FFERENC E FALL 2016 after more than 30 years as one of the School s most beloved and longest tenured faculty members also was well known for holding court at one of the U District s oldest hangouts The Duchess Tavern You look back at forks in the road and our time in Bill s class at the UW at Husky games were all incredibly meaningful for both of us We realize that the lives we re living today wouldn t be possible without everything we experienced at the University of Washington recalls AJ who owns Navigate Research a company that analyzes the value of sports and entertainment partnerships including the recent Alaska Airlines Field deal for the UW Contemplating ways they could honor both their alma mater and their old professor while making a difference for

students Lacey and AJ had only to look back at their own lives Without college scholarships neither of them could ever have been able to afford a UW education By endowing a scholarship the couple s gift to Husky Athletics remains intact and the interest funds the costs of a student s tuition and fees at the UW So they established the Bill Resler Endowed Scholarship for Dukes and Duchesses to be awarded to a Husky student athlete who will pursue a degree in business From now until the end of time it s going to serve student athletes longer than we ll be around AJ says We are so passionate for all things Husky and so tremendously grateful to the UW and the Business School for playing such a critical role in where we are today explains Lacey who serves as general counsel for Express one of the nation s largest apparel retailers The endowment links it all together all these things that are so important to us Both alumni shake their heads humbly in near disbelief of all they have accomplished Each has notched many accolades and awards for their business acumen Again and again they credit the UW for so much of it including the way that sports helped them bond as a couple They live in Chicago but are glued to the TV when the Huskies play and travel to at least one football game every year A lot of student athletes wouldn t be able to attend a school like the UW but for their scholarships We really do believe that education is the great equalizer and that finances should never be a barrier to anyone to attend school Lacey says Education opens doors to a life you never knew was possible AJ adds We re so grateful It makes sense to pay it backwards to the UW U WT YEECLU B O RG 7
