HUSKY SOUTHPAW LEADS WITH POISE PASSION AND PRINCIPLE Stepping onto the mound for his first start at Washington left handed pitcher Channing Nesbitt didn t let the pressure get to him One calm breath at a time pitch after pitch he threw five scoreless innings to earn his first career win as a Husky I remember breathing in and out just trying to embrace the moment he says looking back on the March 2016 game On the field in class and as a UW representative on the PAC 12 Student Athlete Advisory Committee Channing stands out as a leader who meets every challenge with intense focus eager to set a positive example for others At the national Black Student Athlete Summit he talked about growing up in Oakland California where his hard working mom and dad set high expectations for him Many of his peers weren t so fortunate Some got involved with gangs and wound up behind bars Others lives ended violently like a childhood friend s brother gunned down in a police shooting last year Channing returned from the summit determined to play a positive role in fostering frank conversations about race inequities and the progress he hopes will result when people from different backgrounds reach a deeper understanding of one another Whether you re black or Hispanic Muslim or white all of what we endure matters and it needs to be shared he explains Every background needs to be respected And everybody needs to be included for us to move forward as a society A junior majoring in political economy Channing earned a 3 8 GPA last winter quarter while balancing a challenging course load with workouts practices and a mentorship program he sought out despite his busy schedule One talented young high school football player Channing worked with has made a huge turnaround At first withdrawn and skeptical the young man recently declared I m going to college If I have to do community college first so be it I m going to make my family proud Channing appreciates the donors who have made his dream of playing ball at a world class college come true Channing Nesbitt Without their support for scholarships I wouldn t have been able to experience any of this Channing says It s changed my life I ll forever be thankful for that U WT YEECLU B O RG 5

UNBREAKABLE BONDS FOLLOWING ANOTHER INCREDIBLE WINNING SEASON WOMEN S BASKETBALL BASKS IN THE INFLUENCE OF YOUR SUPPORT What motivates a Husky Women s Basketball player Sure it s the chance to play a sport they love at the highest collegiate level It s the opportunity to earn a worldclass UW education It s the energy from their dedicated fans and the exhilaration of a winning season But in the end the success and joy of being a Husky is dominated by one thing It s the relationships Forwards Chantel Osahor and Hannah Johnson know first hand how much those relationships mean For Chantel the powerful personal bonds she s built have helped her rise above injuries and stress to earn a spot in history as Washington s all time leading rebounder says the senior who will earn her degree in political science in June You get to meet the donors who love watching us play supporting us and helping us get through college It s the relationships you build on and off the court with your teachers students teammates coaches the donors that mean the most Chantel Osahor Both young women experienced what could have been careerending injuries their freshman years at Washington Chantel hurt her shoulder when she was struck by a car while riding her bicycle The same year she suffered a stress fracture in her foot and also underwent knee surgery Hannah had back surgery for a herniated disc within a month of arriving at the UW forcing her to skip play for an entire season Today they look back and recognize how the generosity of donors drove their physical and emotional recovery Like all 650 Washington studentathletes they have access to the best possible medical care psychological counseling academic tutoring nutrition and leading edge training and conditioning all supported with gifts to The Competitive Edge Fund The team which ended the season with a run to the Sweet Sixteen also benefits from weekly team building and communications sessions with sports psychologist Cassie Pasquariello And they have the latest technology to analyze their play and their opponents 6 T HE T Y E E DI FFERENC E S PR I N G 2017

We cherish everything that s given to us states Hannah a redshirt sophomore majoring in Gender Women and Sexuality Studies Having all these resources not only helps me become a better studentathlete but it humbles me and makes me grateful not just for the opportunity to play basketball but for everything I have It makes me want to give back in any way I can Chantel agrees adding You go through so many ups and downs as a student athlete Having the support of donors and fans and the University made us the good team we are today But again it s not the financial support that tops the most appreciated list for both Hannah and Chantel At the end of the day we re able to form a bond with the people who support us that will change us as individuals and help us grow as women says Hannah Hannah Johnson LEARNING LAUGHING AND CONNECTING IN AUSTRALIA Every four years Washington athletic teams travel to another country to explore different cultures and to come together as teammates Last summer the Women s Basketball team ventured to Australia where Hannah and Chantel say the team cemented the personal bonds that helped them succeed on the court when they returned home Your generous support funds these once in a lifetime excursions Thank you U WT YEECLU B O RG 7

HIGH TECH TRAINING EDGE EMERGING TECHNOLOGY GIVES COACHES AND ATHLETES RICH DATA SO THEY CAN TRAIN AND COMPETE WHILE REDUCING THE RISK OF INJURY Beau Blanchard and teammates take a biometrics data dive with strength and training coach Henry Ruggiero Two summers ago UW soccer player Beau Blanchard pulled a quad the second day of preseason practice The injury held him back for weeks costing him precious training time as the team prepared for the challenging season ahead Now donor funded technology provides Beau s coaches with rich data on player exertion and recovery helping players like Beau dial back or ramp up training to meet their individual needs From the moment they start warming up for a game or practice each player tucks a Catapult GPS tracking device about half the size of the average smart phone into a chest hugging vest 10 T HE T Y E E DI FFERENC E S PR I N G 2017 With phenomenal precision the monitors track how much distance athletes cover on the field how fast they run from moment to moment the ups and downs of their heart rate and more Henry Ruggiero strength and training coach for Men s Soccer and several other sports analyzes the data player by player He fine tunes plans for the upcoming week to make sure the guys who need rest get it while those who haven t exhausted their reserves push themselves a bit harder Before we d make our training plans based on our best guesses about how hard each guy played Henry

says What this technology allows us to do is to put physical numbers to what they actually did and make better decisions Take Beau for example As a midfielder he might cover more ground in a half hour than a fullback who plays every minute of the game If we didn t have this system we might say He was only a sub so we think he can he can train today Henry explains Now we have data that can tell us it s better to pull him out of practice for a day or give him a lighter load Men s Soccer and Husky Football started using Catapult technology in the summer of 2015 thanks to support from generous donors Women s Soccer rolled it out this fall It s already having a big impact This is going to lead to fitter healthier teams says Head Men s Soccer Coach Jamie Clark Those things don t always go hand in hand In the past you d do so much and you d get in great shape but be on the brink of breaking down With this technology we can have the best of both worlds There s an old school mentality that when you play your hardest all the time always pushing yourself to new limits you can face anything during a game There might be some truth to that but there s very little science behind it Coach Clark says Today we re better equipped than ever before to make smart calls on how to keep our players healthy as we push to advance their fitness strength and speed throughout the season The impact of technology like this will continue to grow as more and more advances are made possible through your gifts to The Competitive Edge Fund YOU GIVE YOUR HUSKIES THE EDGE THEY NEED IN COMPETITION IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE Your gifts to The Competitive Edge Fund give our student athletes a leading advantage in their education in competition and in the mark they will make on the world From sports psychology to computerized performance analysis conditioning equipment to optimum nutrition your support enables student athletes to compete at the highest possible levels You also give these remarkable young men and women something they will value for a lifetime a UW education plus the academic support they need to excel in class and to graduate Through your generosity we connect student athletes with leadership and mentoring programs study abroad opportunities internships and other leading edge learning experiences In addition because of you we re able to recruit and retain the best coaches and staff who are the expert caring faculty who build winning teams and develop lifelong skills in the student athletes they coach and support MAKE YOUR TAX DEDUCTIBLE GIFT to The Competitive Edge Fund and know that you are helping to make a boundless difference for Husky student athletes today and always U WT YEECLU B O RG 11
