Huskies youngest student athlete makes an impact in a stellar season ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASONS IN HISTORY FOR UW WOMEN S TENNIS IN 2018 19 RELIED ON THE STEADY PLAY OF SEASONED TEAM MEMBERS THE LEADERSHIP OF PAC 12 COACH OF THE YEAR ROBIN STEPHENSON AND THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF FRESHMAN SEDONA GALLAGHER I don t like to talk about my age too much cautions Sedona who graduated from her Nevada charter school early to enter the UW at just 16 I just want to be myself and play Fair enough because she can definitely play Coached by her police officer father who gave up a lot of sleep after working the night shift to work with me Sedona recognizes the family sacrifice that led to a coveted UW scholarship She posted a 23 6 singles record a 16 4 mark in doubles and a perfect 9 0 in Pac 12 singles play Her 850 doubles winning percentage was tied for second best in program history The Huskies finished the regular season 21 4 with a program best 8 2 mark in conference play reaching the Pac 12 Tournament semifinals for the first time ever The 21 wins ties the 2004 season for second most in program history This is now the standard for our team and we are excited about the bright future ahead and understand what it takes to be at this level and beyond says Coach Stephenson I m so proud of everyone in our program and so appreciative of the support from our department and everyone in Seattle An English major Sedona plans to propel her UW education toward a career as a professor or attorney I d never be able to come to a university like this without my scholarship Sedona says So thank you donors You re giving us this opportunity to play for such a great school while having a blast And thank you for coming to our matches and cheering and getting to know us and letting us learn from you Our donors rock 3 UWT YEEC LUB O R G

This changed my whole GLOBAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICE AND ATHLETIC EXPERIENCES From the centuries old religious ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia to the windswept golf courses of Ireland the Dutch Parliament building in The Hague to the most iconic landmarks of Rome the world opened up to Husky student athletes this past summer thanks in large part to your generosity The Purple Passport program funded by dedicated Tyee Club donors provided an extraordinary service learning opportunity for 20 student athletes from nine different sports Without access to the internet air conditioning or other comforts the group joined the nonprofit Courts for Kids to transform a poor school in Cambodia into a center of local community life Sleeping in the school s library and storage area beneath fans and mosquito nets the Huskies danced dined and celebrated with village residents After building the sport court in four days they explored local markets Buddhist temples and the tragic killing fields which bear the remains of more than 1 million people Without the complexity of having our phones we were able to be completely present with each other and ourselves Relationships were built on authentic conversations and the ability for us to be vulnerable with one another Despite the language barriers we were able to communicate through our common goal of spreading kindness and happiness with everyone Vanessa Wong Women s Tennis I noticed how these people don t have much but they don t seem to be ashamed or down about it This changed my whole perspective on life when it came to happiness In America we have a certain ideology on how we can achieve happiness through materialistic things but the Cambodian people showed me that they could go to school without shoes without a car or anything that we all deem as nice materialistic things and still be happy with what they do have which is the present moment of being alive Myles Bryant Football 4 UW Tyee Club Gratitude Report

perspective on life INSPIRE STUDENT ATHLETES TO THINK BEYOND BORDERS In partnership with the UW Comparative History of Ideas program a study abroad trip to the Netherlands for 18 student athletes was the culmination of intensive classroom learning about racism in what is typically perceived as a tolerant culture Donor funded team trips open just once every four years under NCAA rules gave Men s Basketball the chance to compete and learn in Italy while Men s Golf honed their game on six of Ireland s most iconic courses They learned about discrimination against Moroccan Dutch people along with the historic erasure of Black culture throughout history explains Rachael Dunn from UW Athletics Academic Services We met with politicians and activists to understand how another country has struggled with racism It was an eye opening experience that exposed all of us to a different culture Basketball was a big piece of the trip but the memories made there and the overall experience is something I will remember for a lifetime Hameir Wright Men s Basketball The biggest lesson I learned in Amsterdam was to stop and listen to what is happening around you People are hurting and trying to help themselves and others yet no one is listening to them If one person in authority would stop and listen to what the minority is saying the religious and racist distress could begin to mend So I will now do everything in my power to listen to the people around me to ensure I am doing everything in my power to help create a little bit of peace in our world Marin A Grote Volleyball 5 UWT YEEC LUB O R G

Boundless Futures DONOR SUPPORTED LEADERSHIP PROGRAM BOOSTS PREPARATION FOR LIFE AFTER SPORTS Lifelong soccer player Taylor Sekyra has grown up a lot since she was the cute little Ding Dong girl at UW Women s Soccer games donning her cheerleader duds to shuttle the chocolate treats to coaches from the sidelines With a Husky history going back so far it was scary to ponder life after college athletics This experience has been my life I ve poured my heart and soul into this team and it means everything to me states the standout defender and Biology major who graduated in spring 2019 and returns for a fifth year season this fall I m a Husky for life of course but the transition to no longer being a student athlete will be tough By taking part in Boundless Futures a multi faceted career and leadership development program that helps prepare student athletes for whatever comes next in their lives Taylor had access to meaningful self reflection tools mentorships and job shadowing experiences It helped me assess where I am today what I m strong at where I want to improve for the future Taylor explains I learned that I m good at cultivating relationships but I wanted to up my emotional intelligence How do I take everything and be my best for my team and myself for the future A generous gift from a Tyee Club member enabled UW Athletics to launch the program much more quickly than initially envisioned The donation endowed the salary of a new Director of Student Athlete Development and Erica Cenci earned the inaugural job Student athletes have all these skills they get through competitive athletics that they don t realize they have time management drive teamwork communication leadership Erica observes It s amazing to see the ah ha moments when they discover what they re capable of outside their sport and to watch as they build a sense of confidence and pride Sports is a big part of their identity Boundless Futures helps them recognize that this isn t all they are Taylor Sekyra Women s Soccer and Erica Cenci 8 UW Tyee Club Gratitude Report

UW Football alumni Michael Neal and Jusstis Warren Like Taylor who job shadowed a Seattle Children s doctor as she prepares to become a physician s assistant UW Football Tight End and alum Michael Neal also boosted his career through Boundless Futures He earned a three month paid internship at Amazon where he presented bold ideas to his team and even spoke at a conference on artificial intelligence in front of Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos I learned that being a leader doesn t mean you know everything It s knowing what you re good at being vulnerable and able to take feedback and hiring people who are different from you and who excel in other areas Michael says of participating in the Boundless Futures Fueled by the skills and confidence he developed in Boundless Futures Michael was one of only two Pac 12 student athletes selected to participate in a nationwide NCAA leadership forum the biggest highlight of my life he says After completing his internship and spending three weeks in Japan in a program that builds international bridges through sports Michael returned home to begin his post grad life with hopes for a position that will build upon everything he s learned throughout his Husky experience The more you invest in Boundless Futures the more you re going to help studentathletes like me change their lives forever Michael says It s all about who you are as a person how you connect with people being empathetic and helping people follow along with your vision That program created incredible opportunities for me Would you like to invest in the future of student athletes Donate to support the ongoing program expenses of programs like Boundless Futures with a gift to The Competitive Edge Fund Learn more at UWTyeeClub org 9 UWT YEEC LUB O R G

The unbelievably fulfilling tale of Keegan Cook s volleyball career THE SEVENTH YEAR HEAD COACH INVESTS IN HIS STUDENT ATHLETES AS HE LIVES A LIFELONG VOLLEYBALL DREAM Keegan Cook s life story reads like a fairy tale a sweetly fated feel good purple tinged account of a California kid whose adventures in volleyball shaped every aspect of his life from college to career to true love Like many good stories the UW Volleyball Head Coach s yarn begins with a hero his big sister Meg As a kid I was dragged around to all her volleyball tournaments recalls Keegan I d steal a ball from the cart and play by myself in a corner of the gym We were close and competitive and I wanted to do what she d done After playing volleyball in high school he followed Meg to St Mary s College of California where he volunteered to coach almost the moment he arrived He also assisted with the high school and traveling teams his sister coached For four years while the rest of my peers were going to music festivals or traveling abroad I was spending all my free time coaching Keegan explains When you re 18 years old and coaching 17 year olds you have to carry yourself in a manner that s very professional You have to take 10 UW Tyee Club Gratitude Report your job very seriously Everyone s expecting you to be mature I was very conscious of those things early on His maturity and professional approach were rewarded Keegan graduated from St Mary s on a Friday in 2007 and three days later started his first professional job as a full time assistant coach at his alma mater While he loved St Mary s Keegan was intrigued by the longevity passion and values of all the UW coaches and staff he met while playing Washington When an assistant coaching position opened at the UW in 2013 he won the role It s the only job he s ever formally applied for The way I express my competitive desire today is by investing in the young women I coach he says When your vocation is to invest in people the return is unbelievably fulfilling When you can help someone grow and change the course of their life that s a different level of joy Teaching them to live their lives based on principles is critical and I try to remember that every day

Page 11

With a degree in mathematics Keegan puts his analytical skills to use as a head coach who makes objective decisions about player rotations and practice schedules I believe in the power of little behaviors repeated day after day so they become a powerful force in your life What are you doing each day that will transform into a life changing experience for you and everyone around you It s a philosophy that has paid off in three Pac 12 championships six trips to the NCAA Tournament including two appearances in the Elite Eight and one in the semifinals and dozens of stellar players and proud UW graduates since Keegan joined UW Volleyball Now in his seventh year at the UW and his fifth as head coach the passion I feel for people in this department this university this city just keeps growing Washington is a place that balances high achievement without sacrificing the true mission of college athletics in helping student athletes grow Like any good tale this one includes a love story Keegan met his fianc e Sarah on a foreign tour with the team in 2017 A former pro volleyball player Sarah joined Keegan in Italy this past summer when he coached the U S Team Chances are they ll live happily ever after Your gifts to The Competitive Edge Fund enable Husky Athletics to attract and retain skilled dedicated coaches like Keegan Watch your mailboxes this fall for your new Tyee Club Membership Guide to learn more about how your support for the Fund benefits you and the teams you love 11 UWT YEEC LUB O R G
