2 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportWhat MattersBy Michael Callahan Head Coach, Washington Men’s RowingWashington Men’s Rowing captured the 2021 IRA National Championship. Of the many storied wins in program history, this one mattered more than ever — and we had to lose to get to this moment. In 2016, after becoming the rst team in rowing history to win ve consecutive IRA National Championships (2011–15), we nished fourth and ended our 12-year run as Team Points Champion. We needed to return to our foundational principles: patience, passion and work.In the following years, we repeated the mantra, “Do the Work” as we expanded the meaning of work. We focused on building stronger teammates, healthier minds and mature leaders. We invested in developing student-athletes who were prepared to embrace and learn from challenges. Our work as coaches wasn’t to pull a team across the nish line; it was to teach and then get out of the way. After nishing second in 2017, 2018 and 2019, our 2020 season was cancelled. COVID became the ultimate test of our athletes’ ability to weather evolving challenges. “Semper Gumby” (always exible) was our motto. With uncertainty still dominating 2021, one day at a time, we began to train. The qualities we had focused on building for over ve years were evident. With joy, humility and gratitude, we practiced the sport we love with deeply committed teammates, friends and sta. Rowing for Washington was what mattered.Going into the IRA National Championship, the other coaches and I could see our success reected in the extraordinary group of leaders and teammates our athletes had become. They understood they were part of something bigger than themselves. That’s what mattered to us.Throughout it all, Tyee Club members like you sustained us —just as you inspired all 22 Washington teams and programs. This publication showcases the impact of your support that mattered all the more during the pandemic. You, the Husky community, matter. Thank you for being a part of something special here at Washington.GRATITUDE REPORT TO TYEE CLUB DONORSOCTOBER 2021Dedicated volunteers help guide the Tyee ClubWe rely on the advice, expertise and commitment of dedicated Tyee Club members who serve on our volunteer committees. UWTYEECLUB.ORG | 3A Tradition of Giving FOUR GENERATIONS OF HUSKIES ARE CHANGING THE WORLD, ONE GIFT AT A TIMEHusky Hall of Fame rower Carl Lovsted Jr. and his UW teammates earned a bronze medal in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. Nearly 70 years later, his namesake boat continues the family legacy in national championship-winning style, while Lovsted endowed scholarships benet new generations of Husky rowers. The family’s Washington connections started in the 1920s, when George and Helen Clarke met as students. Thirty years later, their daughter, Louise, met future husband Carl Lovsted Jr. at the UW. Then, the third generation kicked in with sons Carl III and Jim signing on to the Rowing team, while daughter Karen became a Husky swimmer in the 1980s.From those deep roots bloomed a legacy of generosity that will live in perpetuity.“Jim and I had never rowed, but we knew about the program and its history from our father,” explains Carl III, whose wife Carrie also graduated from the UW. “My dad came from a family without means, and we knew what the program had provided to our family. Our parents wanted to help Washington Rowing continue to be the best program in the nation.”Carl Jr. and Louise established two scholarship endowments, which will support Rowing student-athletes for decades to come. When Louise passed away, her spouse donated a shell in his wife’s honor. Their kids did the same to honor their dad when he passed. Football season-ticket holders since 1977, Carl and Carrie were inspired to do more this year, so they funded a new endowment for Husky Football.“A lot of these kids would never be able to come to Washington without scholarships,” says Carl. “They are so dedicated and driven to succeed, just great kids.”Today, a fourth-generation Husky carries on the family traditions. Carl and Carrie’s daughter, Lindsey, is a senior in the Foster School of Business.“We hope all our kids (including older daughter Christie and son CJ) will carry on the tradition of what our father started,” says Carl. “You never know how you can change the world through a gift to the Huskies.”Carl Lovsted shell dedicationFrom L to R: Carl Lovsted, Al Ulbrickson Jr., Dick Wahlstrom, Fil Leanderson and Al Rossi (cox)From L to R: CJ, Carl, Carrie, Christie and LindseyLEARN ABOUT ALL OUR GENEROUS ENDOWMENT DONORS ON PAGES 13-15.

The Foster Leadership Academy helps them navigate decisions and actions that will aect the rest of their lives.Senior Husky Men’s Soccer player Gio Miglietti was one of the rst 25 student-athletes to participate in the certicate program. He says the Academy helped him learn more about himself and his values, develop more condence, and express his opinions with genuine conviction.“I knew I wanted to take on a greater leadership role with the team during my senior year, but I wasn’t sure how to go about it,” say the California native, an only child from a Uruguayan/Italian culture. “I learned that you can’t treat everyone the same to get the results you’re looking for. Now, I’m able to develop stronger relationships with everyone around me.”The Academy falls under the umbrella of Boundless Futures, which provides a wealth of resources for personal, professional, leadership and civic development. The program relies in part on UW alumni who volunteer to guide and mentor student-athletes.

UWTYEECLUB.ORG | 5What is NIL?AcademySTUDENT-ATHLETES FOR LIFE DURING AND AFTER SPORTSWhat is NIL and how did it come about? The NCAA has long prohibited college athletes from accepting money related to the use of their name, image or likeness (NIL). Over the last few years, the NCAA, federal and state lawmakers have pushed to permit student-athletes to benet from their NIL, with 25 states recently passing laws and the NCAA modernizing its rules to allow student-athletes to capitalize on their NIL while still representing their universities. While colleges and third parties still cannot pay student-athletes to play, athletes can make money from other sources — just like every other Washington student has always been allowed to do.How will student-athletes be able to capitalize on NIL?They might be compensated as social media “inuencers,” who earn money for promoting products or services online. They could sell autographs, secure endorsements from companies, be paid for teaching in athletic camps or clinics, earn money from personal appearances or ads, or start their own businesses. What rules are in place to guide these new standards? The Washington Legislature has not yet enacted NIL legislation, nor has Congress passed a sweeping federal law. NIL opportunities may be dierent at dierent schools without a uniform NIL law. Husky Athletics is following NCAA guidelines that:• Permit the use of their NIL to gain compensation• Allow student-athletes to hire an attorney or agent to guide them• Prevent schools or third parties from using prospective NIL deals in recruiting Husky Athletics has developed its own institutional policies to guide student-athletes.What is Husky Athletics doing to prepare student-athletes to navigate NIL opportunities?Since 2018, the UW has been developing comprehensive programming to provide student-athletes with the mentorships, training and education needed to maximize this new opportunity through our Boundless Futures program. We will continue to leverage UW’s platform, alumni network and Seattle location to provide other resources to help student-athletes seize NIL opportunities. Can Tyee Club donors partner with student-athletes for NIL activities?Yes, as long as long student-athletes disclose their activities prior to signing a deal and follow our ICA policies. Visit GoHuskies.com/NIL to learn more. Questions? Please contact Sr. Associate Athletic Director Jamaal Walton at 206-543-4611 or waltonjo@uw.edu.West Point graduate and former U.S. Army ocer Josh Rodriguez earned his MBA from the Foster School. He lectured in the Academy, which is built on four “authentic leadership pillars”: Transparency, Balanced Processing, Self-Awareness and Moral/Ethical Perspective.Josh talked with Academy students about resilience and decision-making, using his harrowing experiences in Afghanistan to illustrate the consequences of an ethical and well-thought-out decision that yields devastating results.“At end of day, your decision may not result in the best outcomes, but you need to be able to live with it,” explains Josh, who works for Goldman Sachs and serves on the Foster School Board. “How do you hold yourself accountable? If it doesn’t play out, how do you continue?”Funded in part by Tyee Club donors, Boundless Futures “ensures that student-athletes leave the UW equipped to succeed for the rest of their lives,” Josh says.As the new era of college athletics continues to develop, Washington Athletics will hone and expand programs, resources and mentorship opportunities to help student-athletes capitalize on every new opportunity.‘Name, Image and Likeness’ decisions allow student-athletes to earn compensation PHOTO: Foster School of Business

6 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportThank you, Tyee Club, for going In January 2020, Washington Athletics was gearing up for a fabulous spring sports season. Then, COVID-19 hit. We moved quickly to prioritize the safety of our student-athletes, coaches and sta. Soon after, we started crunching numbers. The outlook was bleak. The projected loss of revenue not only threatened immediate essential services to student-athletes; it portended red ink for years to come. Then, Husky Nation stepped up. Thanks to you, student-athletes thrived in the classroom and in competition. On these two pages, we share with you the amazing extent of your generosity and the impact you made by donating to our Huskies All In and One Team initiatives. $33 million TOTAL OVERALL GIFTS6,695 Loyal Tyees who donated4,012 and $12.9 millionSeason-ticket holders who donated ticket fees and/or seat-related gifts in FY20/211,027Husky fans who donated for the rst time

8 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportMeet the Huskies’ neThanks to your support, Washington continues to recruit and retain some of the nation’s best coaches. King County native Jen Llewellyn rolled her rst somersault as a 2-year-old in a Bothell day care center. A few decades and countless accolades later, she returns home as Head Coach of Washington Gymnastics. Her talents recognized even as a preschooler, Jen grew up in local club gyms.“I was the only child of a single mother, just mom and me. That community of gymnastics became our family,” recalls Jen, a Pac-12 champion, NCAA silver-medalist in bars, and rst-team All American at Oregon State. “I thought I wanted to go into business, but after taking a fth year to help with the team, I knew I loved coaching.”Jen joined the Huskies after nine years leading Lindenwood University in Missouri to six conference and three Division II national champion-ships. She earned three conference and two national titles as Head Coach of the Year. The opportunity to compete in Division I gymnastics, coupled with the “people-rst mindset” of UW Athletics, drew Jen to Washington.“A lot of schools emphasize winning at all costs,” she states. “What the UW believes in is what I believe in: person rst, student second, athlete third. We still want to win — and we will win — by empowering our student-athletes to be their best in all aspects of their lives. When you fall in love with the process and work hard on getting better every day, the results take care of themselves.”PHOTOS: Lindenwood Athletics“When our women nish college, they can’t become professional gymnasts,” says Jen, whose husband Cody serves as an assistant coach. The couple has a 21-month-old son, Grayson. “We support them in discovering their interests, strengths and passions outside the gym.”Following the high-prole Olympic Games, the sport continues to grow in popularity.“College gymnastics is an incredibly fun atmosphere and we want everyone in Husky Nation to be excited about it,” Jen concludes. “We look forward to welcoming fans and donors to the gym to meet and watch these talented young women who will go on to do amazing things in their lives.”JEN LLEWELLYN GYMNASTICS HEAD COACH

UWTYEECLUB.ORG | 9Fresh o her third champi-onship in a row in the 14-school USA Conference, Alabama native Tina Langley followed her values to Washington.“My mother and grandmother were great inuences on me,” says Tina, who lettered in basketball at West Alabama and earned a place in the school’s Hall of Fame. “My grand-mother was a big sports fan and she encouraged me to get into basketball in high school. My mother was an incredible servant-leader who helped me develop as a values-based coach.”Initially, Tina never intended to coach. Shortly after she started her rst post-college job as a special education teacher in her hometown, her former high school coach asked her to help out with the basketball team.“As a new teacher, I didn’t really have a choice!” she laughs. It didn’t take long for that forced choice to become a real passion. Tina doggedly pursued a graduate assistantship as the rst step in coaching college students. In her rst head coaching position, Tina led an extraordinary revitalization of the Women’s Basketball program at Rice University in Houston. The 2018-19 Conference USA Coach of Tina and her mom, CharlottePHOTOS: Rice Athleticsthe Year took her teams to a 126-61 record over six seasons and an astonishing 44-4 in conference play the last three years. Her beloved mother’s passing in January 2021 opened a bittersweet door for Tina to nally leave the South for Seattle, where a conuence of values drew her and much of her Rice coaching sta to the UW — “a wonderful community has embraced me and made me feel at home.”“Washington is the perfect place to bring young women to help them prepare for life after college,” she states. “We are teachers. We want to help young women develop academically, athletically and personally. On the court, we want to teach the game well and help them become ecient basketball players. O the court, every young person we bring to the UW should have a passion for academic excellence and be thinking about how they will make a dierence in this world.”TINA LANGLEY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD COACHwest head coachesThese winning women are poised to take Gymnastics and Women’s Basketball to great heights.

I fell in love with the camaraderie, the emotion, the sport, the pursuit of unachievable perfection that’s always available. I knew that this was going to be something that I could carry with me forever,” says Jessica. She carried it all the way to global stage of the Olympics, where she competed in the Women’s Eight with fellow UW alumni Brooke Mooney (’18) and coxswain Katelin Guregian (’09).The 2018 Washington graduate is one of 35 current and former Washington student-athletes and coaches who competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Huskies earned a total of eight medals.Thrilled to represent her country, Jessica said it was also special to represent Washington.“Being a Husky is being part of a legacy,” she says. “There is something deep inside of us that resonates with every oarsman and woman who came before us and all who come after us. There’s a greater purpose to what we do, a greater sense of what it means not just to be a Husky rower but to be human. As soon as you look into the eyes of your teammates or an alum, something inside you resonates and you realize they know what it is. It’s this unspoken energy that runs through every ber of our being.”Huskies in the Olympics!STUDENT-ATHLETES AND COACHES REPRESENT WASHINGTON ON A GLOBAL STAGE IN TOKYOPHOTO: Matthew Adekponya Matisse Thybulle, Men’s BasketballDanielle Lawrie, SoftballKelsey Plum, Women’s Basketball

12 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportAlliance Advances InclusionWomen’s Soccer player Makayla Woods and discus-thrower Elijah Mason were primed for leadership early. The daughter of a school principal and kindergarten teacher, Makayla grew up as a biracial kid in predominantly white Vancouver, Washington. The son of a single mother and a father who passed away when Elijah was just 5 years old, the Track and Field standout was shaped by the sacrices his mom made to give her three sons the best possible lives. The pair has advanced the four-year-old Black Student-Athlete Alliance (BSAA) to heightened levels of collaboration with Athletic Department leadership. The organization’s mission is “to assemble community, promote diversity and increase opportunity for the lives of the Black Student-Athlete.”“This isn’t just a black student-athlete ght. It’s our country’s ght for all people to live safely and be part of a just society,” explains Elijah, who was raised in Arizona. “That means having uncomfortable conversations to address what racism is.”The Alliance proposed its most signicant change to Athletic Department leaders last year, advocating for a new senior-level position to oversee diversity, equity and inclusion. The Department hired Sheridan Blanford for that new position early this year. In the fall, the BSAA spearheaded a voter initiative on campus, and plans are under way to increase mentorship opportunities. It can be intimidating for black student-athletes to attend predominantly white institutions like Washington, notes Makayla.“When you don’t see anyone who looks like you in a classroom, where some people feel you’re here just because you can play a sport, it can make it hard to dedicate yourself to school,” she explains. “Should I do pre-med or pursue my engineering dreams? Will I t in?”Elijah sums up the Alliance’s grandest goals for social justice that stretch beyond the athletic space.“Ultimately, I want the best for everyone around me,” he concludes. “For the generations after me, for the kids I bring into the world someday, I need to do everything I can now to change things and create the best possible society for them.”ADVOCATES FOR SOCIETAL CHANGE STRIVE TO CREATE A THRIVING ENVIRONMENT FOR BLACK STUDENT-ATHLETES

UWTYEECLUB.ORG | 13Volleyball’s QuarterbackELLA MAY POWELL ANCHORS A GRATEFUL TEAM: ‘YOUR DONATIONS MEAN EVERYTHING TO US’Ella May Powell was exhausted.Although college scouts no longer recruit very young Volleyball players, the standout setter from Arkansas elded her rst scholarship oer in the eighth grade. Over the next several years, she traveled to countless schools across the country as she weighed her college future. When Washington invited her to visit, a worn-out Ella May told her parents, “Nope, I’m not going.”“I was mentally drained, but my parents talked me into it,” she recalls. “Even in phone calls before I got on the plane, Washington made me feel so appreciated as a person and valued for who I am. They showed me around campus like a normal visit, and then Keegan (Cook, Volleyball head coach) and I just sat on the court and talked for a couple hours. This team wanted me for my character, not just my volleyball skills.”Ella May made the right choice. She’s thrived at Washington as a student, an athlete and a leader. “The quarterback of the volleyball team” as she describes her role as setter, helped lead the Huskies to an NCAA Final Four berth last season. Along the way, she developed a new sense of gratitude for what the game and its supporters have taught her.“So many people worked so hard and gave so much to make the year seem normal to us. Even though they couldn’t be in the stands (because of the pandemic), we all felt such deep appreciation for the donors who enable us to follow our dreams. Your donations mean everything to us,” says Ella May, whose scholarship is funded by loyal Husky donor Anne Gittinger.“Volleyball has taught me so much about life,” adds the senior communications major. “I’ve learned to lead, on the court and o; to understand how to motivate people; to develop mental toughness; and to be candid and come from a place of love. Whatever the future holds, I’ll carry a lot of these skills with me.”Her immediate future includes two more seasons with the Huskies. Two more years to learn, grow and relish every moment on the court.

14 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportThe legacy of a loving Husky fanA LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO STUDENT-ATHLETES LIVES ONArnie Pomerinke always led with his heart.“He loved helping other people. It was as though he was just breathing, it came so naturally,” describes his wife Ann Marie. His humble, generous nature made Arnie’s sudden passing from a heart attack in 2014 all the more dicult for those who loved him. His celebration of life was held at the stadium’s Club Husky. When they met at Central Washington University in 1971, Arnie was married and Ann Marie was dating her high school sweetheart. A decade later, they both wound up single again and found their way to each other.Arnie co-owned the bar Dante’s in the U-District and owned the Lock Spot in Ballard. Ann Marie capped a long career in charitable work as CEO of a 12-state region of the American Cancer Society. With Arnie’s son Keith, they built a life that was enriched by sports and lled with passion for UW student-athletes.“Supporting the Huskies was not just about the games, but about the coaches who were so inspiring to student-athletes,” Ann Marie explains. “When Arnie was a boy, his coaches taught him so much. He wanted Washington coaches to develop the same character and commitment to teamwork in the students they coach.”As Ann Marie was going through Arnie’s wallet after his death, she found a plasticized card with a quote adapted from Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore: “I slept and dreamt that life was service. I acted and beheld that service was joy.”It was one more thing that motivated her to honor her husband’s legacy by establishing an endowed schol-arship for Husky Football, seeding the endowment with a generous donation. Friends’ contributions grew the fund before Ann Marie made a second gift to fully support an in-state scholarship — wrapping the thank-you letter and presenting it to Keith for Christmas.“The amazing thing about endowments is that they support student-athletes in perpetuity,” Ann Marie says. “I know that Arnie is looking down, saying this is incredible.“We believe that you don’t give until it hurts, you give until it feels good. Supporting the Huskies will change your life and the lives of student-athletes.”

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTONBox 354070 Seattle WA 98195-4070tyeeclub@uw.edu 206.543.2234 uwtyeeclub.orgThe 2021 Husky Hall of Fame class spotlights a legacy of athletic and activist contributionsThe Husky Hall of Fame’s newest inductees represent the deep history of Washington Athletics along with some of the greatest names of its recent history. Honorees include: The class features two of Washington Football’s most beloved quarterbacks, two of the most outstanding tennis players in school history, a hard-working and highly successful basketball star, one of the UW softball program’s greatest sluggers, and the rst Men’s Soccer player ever to be inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame. “The Five Who Dared” were four Washington football players and one assistant coach who, amid the social turbulence of the 1960s, stepped up quietly and forcefully to use their voices and their platforms as student-athletes to protest racial injustice. The 2021 class will be recognized at this year’s homecoming game, Oct. 16 vs. UCLA, with ocial ceremonies scheduled for Oct. 17.Jon Brockman, Men’s Basketball, 2005-2009Claire Carter, Women’s Tennis, 2001-2004Eric Drew, Men’s Tennis, 1996-1999Gregg Alex, Ralph Bayard, Harvy Blanks, Lamar Mills and Carver Gayton, Football, “1969 – The Five Who Dared”Jake Locker, Football, 2007-2010Kristen Rivera, Softball, 2002-2005Marques Tuiasosopo, Football, 1997-2000Craig Waibel, Men’s Soccer, 1994-1998
