2 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportOUR DEDICATED DONORS ARE UNIQUELY WASHINGTONYou are extraordinary. As a donor who champions Husky student-athletes — in good times and hard times, in the ever-evolving world of intercollegiate athletics — you understand the crucial role you play in the lifelong development of these extraordinary young men and women. You are Uniquely Washington.Of course, other university athletic programs enjoy donor support. But I’d challenge any of them to match your steadfast and monumental impact. In this publication, you’ll see rsthand how you change the lives of our student-athletes. From Lucas Meek, the Men’s Soccer player compelled to make a dierence in honor of his grandfather, to the student-athletes who expanded their horizons in a study-abroad trip to Italy, to the other donors encouraged by your example — you make a powerful dierence.Whether you contribute $100 a year to your favorite team or devote $1 million to establish an endowed scholarship, each one of you makes an important contribution to creating well-rounded leaders, community-driven citizens and condent dream chasers. This report is our tribute to you and your generosity. As we continue our year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX, we recognize the advances that you’ve helped young women realize in competition and in the classroom. It’s an exciting time to be a female student-athlete today — as we like to say, Mighty Are the Women! You care about your Huskies, not just when they win or when it’s easy. You care because you know you’re building champions in competition and in life. And that’s what makes you Uniquely Washington.Go Dawgs!GRATITUDE REPORT NOVEMBER 2022DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS HELP GUIDE THE TYEE CLUBWe rely on the advice, expertise and commitment of dedicated Tyee Club members who serve on our volunteer committees. UWTYEECLUB.ORG | 3A BIG HEART REAPS BIG REWARDSFACED WITH HIS GRANDFATHER’S ALS DIAGNOSIS, UW MEN’S SOCCER MIDFIELDER LUCAS MEEK FINDS RESILIENCE AND A WAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN HIS HONOR.Lucas Meek’s world turned upside down in 2020 when he discovered his grandfather was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (commonly known as ALS). “That news shook my family pretty hard. Luckily, he’s still with us, but it’s been challenging to witness his decline,” says Lucas, a redshirt senior on the UW Men’s Soccer team. “Once it started to sink in, I began thinking of ways to honor him and his memory, as well as give back to the ALS community that’s been so supportive,” Lucas recalls.Collegiate sports underwent a signif-icant change in 2021 when NCAA released its guidelines permitting student-athletes to earn compensation for the use of their name, image or likeness (NIL). Lucas deviated from cashing in for personal gain and instead partnered with Vintage Brand to help market soccer merchandise and create a T-shirt design with the logo for ALS. This is a peerless example of how student-athletes are using NIL for a virtuous cause.During this time, Lucas also began running fundraising ideas by his Head Coach, Jamie Clark. “He said, why don’t you do a whole tournament? After a brief consideration, I thought, yeah, why the heck not?”Lucas didn’t know what to expect in terms of all of the logistics, but his perseverance paid o. “The event was wildly successful — over 50 teams participated, and it raised $40,000,” he says proudly. Lucas received generous support from coaches Jamie Clark, Richard Reece and Mark Rollings, as well as Kaycie Hutchins, Director of Operations for UW Soccer. Additionally, every one of his teammates participated in the event. The Kick 4 ALS tournament was so lucrative that the ALS Association Evergreen Chapter requested he put it on annually, and he agreed. But perhaps more important, Lucas’ grandfather astounded his family by showing up to the tournament. “Having him there, sharing that experience and seeing the smile on his face was profound; knowing it all started with him made it a very special day,” Lucas expresses. Whether Lucas is organizing big fundraising tournaments or giving his all on the eld, Head Coach Jamie Clark sees something special in him. “Lucas has an unrelenting positivity; he’s a strong-willed young man and doesn’t allow adversity to inuence that deter-mination,” Jamie says. “There’s a lot happening behind the smile.” In his nal year with UW Men’s Soccer, Lucas is one step closer to bringing that unap-pable attitude on a return trip to Cary, North Carolina — the site of the 2022 Men’s College Cup. The team recently clinched the Pac-12 Championship with a 14-0-3 record. Their fourth title in program history gives them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. After college, he looks forward to a promising future as a professional soccer player and a full-time position with the accounting rm Ernst & Young.“Thank you doesn’t feel like it’s enough to convey my deep gratitude to the donors and alumni that have prepared me for the next stage in my career,” Lucas declares.

4 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportTHE BENEVOLENCE OF A LOYAL HUSKY FAMILY LIVES ON IN PERPETUITYGEORGE AND MARLENE ZOFFEL SPURRED ON FUTURE GENERATIONS OF ENERGIZED DONORS AND SUPPORTERS.This charming love story began when George Zoel and Marlene Jackson became high school sweethearts at West Seattle High School in the 1950s. From there they both attended the University of Washington, beginning a remarkable legacy of Husky pride and seless giving now reaching into its fourth generation.George and Marlene’s devotion to the UW was so great that all ve of their daughters also attended. Two of the daughters, Marnelle and Monica, state that “UW became part of our lifestyle. There’s a lot of tradition in our family; we rmly embrace the values our parents chose before us.” After graduation, George started a successful company that eventually expanded across the country. While living in California, the Zoel’s Husky pride continued to burn brightly; they often ew back to Washington to cheer their beloved team on. The entire Zoel clan is dedicated to supporting UW Athletics. It was important to George and Marlene to give back to the university they loved. They established an endowment in 2005 to support Husky Football, and the family has donated over $1 million to the athletic department and became part of the Tyee Club Champion Circle this year. “There’s a lot of loyalty to the alma mater that began with our parents and there’s a continuation of that with our kids — a love for the university and everything it stands for. It’s made our lives so much fuller,” shares Monica. The current recipient of the Football endowment is Asa Turner, a senior safety who coincidentally attended the same California high school as the Zoel daughters. The family is committed to the success of the student-athlete their endowment supports and has taken the time to get to know Asa personally by attending practices and inviting him to family events.

UWTYEECLUB.ORG | 5THE IMPACT OF ENDOWMENTSWhen you contribute to an endowed scholarship, you provide our student-athletes with the opportunity for a world-class education at the University of Washington. In addition to scholarships, endowments can also support program and coaching expenses that positively impact student-athletes. 24.3 PERCENTof student-athlete scholarships are covered by endowments. Total number of vested athletic endowments: 248Our donors establish an average of 8 NEWENDOWMENTS every year.“Asa is a great guy, we feel so blessed as a family to provide our support,” says Marnelle. “It’s so rewarding to be a part of their lives. The unique aspect of the Football endowment is that you get to follow the student through the years.”Although George passed away in 2021 and Marlene is unable to attend, the Zoels still enjoy getting together for Husky Football games. They set up an elaborate tailgate and watch the game or unite around the TV to cheer the Huskies on at home. “The Zoel tailgate is known as the gathering place, which is a big deal on game day,” Monica explains. “Regardless of where the family is, the spirit of Husky Football has always brought us back together.” George and Marlene have 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. According to Marnelle, “Seven of the 16 grandchildren are proud graduates of UW.” This makes three generations to wear purple and gold — an impressive legacy to behold.

6 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportA STRONG COMMUNITY NURTURES CONFIDENT LEADERSALLIANCE GROWS WITH AUTHENTICITY, IMPACT AND BLACK JOY AT THE FOREFRONTWhile she doesn’t think of herself as a natural born leader, Sophie Summers displays the type of self-awareness, authenticity and values that only the best leaders possess. As a volleyball player, co-president of the Black Student-Athlete Alliance (BSAA) and a young woman navigating her intersecting identities, Sophie is actively nding herself and growing her community. “I think there’s a straight line, for me, from knowing who I am and being condent to feeling like I’m supported and in a community. My dad saw that I was both passionate and had a lot to say from a very young age. He always encouraged me to do the things I do with excellence.”that was both authentic to me and felt like I was doing something tangible.”As co-President alongside fellow student-athlete Lexi Griggsby, Sophie has helped organize several successful events in the past year, but what she really looks forward to are the alliance meetings and occasional Pictionary games with her peers. “It’s just time for us to spend together and to laugh and be joyous. That’s one of our main principles — the idea of cultivating Black joy, because there’s a lot of Black student-athlete struggle,” says Sophie. “We want to see people smile and we want to take some of the pressure o of Black student-athletes — to empower them and give them a place to feel safe.”“BSAA gives our student-athletes and myself the condence to know who you are, to use your resources, to persevere, to get better, to feel safe, to feel like you can go for it.” When asked to reect on the support she’s received, Sophie shares that “Thank you comes to mind, but it falls short of what donations and scholarships do for student-athletes … You’re helping people achieve their dreams and achieve lifelong success, setting them up to not just be great athletes but amazing people.”Go Huskies! That’s why Summers chose the University of Washington and soon after found herself co-leading the BSAA. “UW had everything I wanted. It was just a really special culture that doesn’t exist in the other places I looked at. From the coaching sta to our athletic admin to our academic advisers, everyone works in such a beautiful, family-style way to support their student-athletes. I felt like no matter what I chose to pursue with my major or in my life that I was going to be supported.”Sophie joined the BSAA after the upswelling of social change in the summer of 2020. “I felt really called to action to be a part of the Black community and contribute in a way

UWTYEECLUB.ORG | 7TRAVEL ABROAD MAKES A BIG IMPRESSION DONOR GIFTS FUND STUDY-ABROAD PROGRAM, INSPIRING STUDENT-ATHLETES LIKE FOOTBALL’S ROME ODUNZE.It’s becoming a familiar sight: Rome Odunze catching touchdown passes in spectacular ways on the Football eld. But when he “opened his heart” to the unfamiliar, he found new meaning in life.Rome was one of 12 Husky student-athletes who traveled to Italy for a life-changing journey. Rome, a junior and a Football player, shares, “It opened me up to experiencing a dierent culture and adapting to a new way of living. The appreciation I have for playing Football was magnied and became the biggest takeaway.” Rome further expresses, “I am truly grateful. Opening people’s minds to nd deeper meaning and achieve more unity in the world is just what we need.”When asked about his favorite memories, Rome recalls cruising around the city on scooters, “Seeing the Colosseum lit up at night is phenomenal; I’ll never forget that.” He was also mesmerized by the historical landmarks and architecture that were part of the program. In addition to the vast history of the city, one of Rome’s favorite memories was the food. “I ate pasta and pizza every day; there was a gelato place right outside our residence that was sensational,” Rome shares with a beaming smile. “The food was fantastic; whatever stereotypes there are around food and Italian culture, they’re all true.”The wide receiver advises future study-abroad students to open themselves up to unfamiliar experi-ences so they can understand themselves and the world from a broader perspective. Kim Durand, who leads academic services for student-athletes, applauds donors who step up to fund such mind-opening experiences for young men and women. “The study-abroad program is completely underwritten by donor gifts,” Kim explains. “The uniqueness of our donors is that they really want their gifts to make an impact. I believe in this program; it has the ability to be life-changing.”

8 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportHEAD COACHES IMPRESS YOUR SUPPORT HELPS US HIRE THE NATION’S BEST COACHES. MEET OUR NEWEST JASON KELLYBASEBALL HEAD COACHJason Kelly has built his career around the development of elite pitchers. After several seasons with ASU and LSU and an earlier tenure as pitching coach for UW, he returns to Washington as Head Coach. During his earlier time with Husky Baseball, Jason was named D1Baseball.com’s National Assistant Coach of the Year, and the team made it to the College World Series for the rst time in program history. We are thrilled to welcome him back! You were the pitching coach at Washington for seven seasons, 2013-2019, your longest tenure in that role. What was the process for coming back? The UW completely surprised me with the call asking if I would be interested in coming back as Head Baseball Coach. It was an easy decision for me. I’m so excited to return to where my children grew up and to be surrounded by the great people here. It’s like coming home. It’s crazy how things work out. How would you describe your coaching philosophy?Winning is part of it, but not all of it. I have a servant’s attitude; it’s always something I have abided by. The UW is such a special place, and I do everything I can to help these kids get better. I resonate with the intrinsic values of the UW. For me, the combination of athletics and academics makes it one of the nest institutions in the country. What message do you have for your supporters? How are donors crucial to the success of the team?I’m extremely appreciative of our donors. Everything that takes place on the eld is thanks to people like you. The technological part of this game is skyrocketing in dierent ways. We want to raise money to put tools in the hands of our players to help them measure what they do. Donors provide us with the resources we need to keep up and help us oer the best tools for our players. Relationships are essential to me, and I hope to have you, the donors, involved with the entire team. Tell me about your family. When I’m not spending time at the UW, I live in Carnation with my wife, Tracy, and our two children. Peyton is 14 and a freshman, and Cade is 13 and in 7th grade.

UWTYEECLUB.ORG | 9AS BEST IN THEIR FIELDHUSKIES WHO ARE READY TO LEAD BASEBALL AND MEN’S TENNIS TO THE TOP.RAHIM ESMAILMEN’S TENNIS HEAD COACHRahim Esmail has 16 years of collegiate coaching under his belt, including a decade of experience as Head Coach at Samford University, where he was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 2021. Last season, he helped the Huskies reach the NCAA Championships for the rst time since 2017 as Associate Head Coach. As the new Head Coach for Washington, he brings his experience as a standout former student-athlete and a strong set of values for a holistic approach. As a former student-athlete, what is important for you to accomplish as the head coach?I have a list of ideas and I look forward to putting them to fruition, but the community and growing the game in general is really important to me. It’s a game that’s given a lot to me, and my duty is to give back to the game and these kids as much as I can. I plan to be involved in the community as much as possible. How does donor support make a dierence?Donor support allows us to play against the best teams in the country. We see ourselves as a program that can be right up there competing for Pac-12 Championships and National Championships. In order to have those opportu-nities, we have to give our kids that exposure. While our Pac-12 schedule is great and we have a lot of strong teams in our conference, we are all predominately on the West Coast. If we want to continue to give our student-athletes opportunities to compete against the best, outside of conference play, we have to travel quite a distance. Gifts from our supporters allow us to travel and play a schedule that gives our kids those opportunities. It’s not just about the gifts and money. It’s the time, being a part of the community and playing such an important role in our student-athletes’ growth that means the world to us. Having support from you, whether it’s community support or donations, allows our student-athletes to grow and get to another level; it’s all very valued. Whatever impact you have doesn’t go unnoticed, and it’s greatly appreciated. What is the most rewarding part about coaching? The rewarding part is just seeing your student-athletes grow and seeing the experiences they have. I had my time as a student-athlete and during those four years it was about me and the rest of my teammates — but it’s not about me anymore. It’s about the kids I work with, the University and just being a person in the community that can help grow the game and impact these young men.

Whether it’s taking pressure o the cost of tuition, giving them the opportunity to travel abroad or supporting their eorts to make a dierence in the community, the benets of your generosity and commitment to Husky student-athletes are far-reaching and tangible. Thank you for investing in the lives of future leaders and the legacy of UW Athletics. Your giving in scal year 2022 made a BIG impact!

12 | UW Tyee Club Gratitude ReportAN UNFORGETTABLE HUSKY EXPERIENCEHUSKY FOOTBALL ALUM AND BIG W CLUB MEMBER KAI BYNUM RECALLS THE POSITIVE INFLUENCE THE UW HAD ON HIS LIFE.Growing up in Olympia, Washington, Kai Bynum always had an anity for the University of Washington and knew it was the place for him. Now Head of School at Lakeside School in Seattle, Kai shares what made his Husky experience unique and shaped him into the strong leader he is today. Kai recalls fondly, “It was just alive with energy. I had a lot of options out of high school, but as UW became more tangible, it was a no-brainer. I loved it.”At Washington, Kai played Husky Football. While he enjoyed his time on the team, he says that his greatest achievement was handling his academic workload. Managing a heavy course load while being a student-athlete was something dicult that he really valued. “UW gave me the space to take risks, make dicult decisions and be vulnerable,’’ he says, adding that Washington strikes a remarkable balance of encouraging students to excel on and o the eld; it’s never one thing or the other.“As a student-athlete, I was able to lean into that culture. It’s a big part of what shaped me as a person. If you can’t be yourself in certain spaces like the UW, you can’t take intellectual risks or make tough choices about life and where you’re going.”These are the principles Kai brings into his work as an educator and school leader. His experience coaching others has helped him recognize the importance of those who mentored him during his time at Washington.“I’ve been able to grow through their guidance and their sage advice. Without them, I wouldn’t have the experience or perspective,” says Kai, who spent the last 22 years in New England. “If I can be an ambassador for the school, knowing what it’s done for me, that’s what I’m happy to do.”

TITLE IX opened the door to equity for women in athletics, education and life. Decade by decade, championship after championship, win or lose, the UW’s female student-athletes have made us proud. Now, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark legislation, you have the opportunity to keep the momentum rolling. Your gift to the Mighty Are the Women Fund will honor the hard-fought gains of the past 50 years by supporting the world-changing potential of today’s Washington women.Your donation will fund improvements in more than 300 student-athletes’ athletic, academic and personal growth. You will help ensure that the Huskies remain competitive and that every young woman can reach for her dreams. We’ve come a long way, but the journey must continue!
